About Michigan Now
Michigan Now brings together two powerful messaging, communications and information platforms at the University of Michigan — Michigan News and The University Record — both under the Office of the Vice President for Communications.
Michigan News
Michigan News is the central media relations office at the University of Michigan. Staffed mostly by former journalists, the office is organized on a beat system, much like a working newsroom. Michigan News writers promote faculty research, expertise and engagement, as well as major events, announcements and programs to enhance the university’s reputation around the world.
Writers collaborate with representatives in U-M’s 19 schools and colleges to cover research regarding public health, artificial intelligence, the global economy, the environment, politics, the arts, engineering advancements and more. Michigan News also connects reporters on tight deadlines with experts who can comment on breaking news of the day and other timely topics.
The team pitches and places faculty and administrative leaders into mainstream news organizations worldwide (TV, radio, print, online), as well as local, state and regional outlets. And as the media landscape continues to evolve, Michigan News targets the audience where it lives, from Reddit to Substack and everywhere in between. International staff translate relevant content into Spanish, Portuguese and other languages, and pitch to global media representatives in their native tongues.
The University Record
The University Record is the official source for faculty-staff news at the University of Michigan, a role it first began serving in 1891.
News is posted to the website daily, and a print edition is distributed weekly during the academic year and a few times over the summer. A companion University Record email newsletter is distributed daily during the academic year and weekly during the summer.
The University Record writes and shares articles of interest to U-M faculty, staff and retirees from units across the Ann Arbor campus, the Health System and from the Flint and Dearborn regional campuses. The University Record is distributed free from newsstands on all campuses. It is mailed to university retirees.
