New signalized crosswalk coming to North University

Estimated reading time: 1 minutes

The midblock crosswalk near Central Campus Transit Center on North University Avenue is a vital connection point for students, faculty and staff, serving more than 1,500 pedestrians each peak hour.

The high volume of foot traffic often leads to significant traffic queues, which can delay vehicles and campus bus service.

A new traffic and pedestrian crossing signal is designed to change that. By providing clear, dedicated times for both pedestrians to cross and for traffic to proceed, the new system will greatly improve safety as well as the flow of the entire corridor.

During peak hours, this signal will provide 75% of the timing cycles to pedestrians, and the remaining 25% of the cycle to vehicles. During off-peak times, the signal will be approximately 50/50 in timing.

Based on a recent traffic analysis, this new signal is expected to reduce delay times for traffic by up to 73%, while also making it a safer crosswalk for pedestrians.

When the signal is activated late August, people can make the bus system more effective for everyone by waiting for the walk signal before entering the crosswalk and follow normal pedestrian and traffic signal rules at this midblock signal.
