The University of Michigan has appointed John J. Powers as executive director of University Audit Services, effective April 1, 2026.

University Audit Services leads the university’s internal audit function and supports the university-wide system of internal controls and risk management. The executive director reports administratively to the president and functionally to the chair of the Board of Regents’ Finance, Audit and Investment Committee.

Powers’ appointment concludes a six-month nationwide search to succeed Jeff Moelich, who retired in June 2025.

Powers brings more than 20 years of auditing and consulting experience to the university. Most recently, he spent 11 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers in its Risk and Regulatory practice, serving as a director for the past seven years. During his tenure, he led engagements focused on internal audit, compliance and risk management within the higher education, academic medical center and non-profit sectors.

“I am confident that John will bring both a fresh perspective and steady leadership to University Audit Services, reinforcing the university’s institutional strengths,” said President Domenico Grasso.

Grasso also thanked Hilaire Nachrab for serving as the interim executive director of University Audit Services.

The Office of the President launched the search last fall, and the search advisory committee was chaired by Michelle Casey, the university’s ethics, integrity and compliance officer. The committee included representatives from across campus, including Business and Finance, student life, research, the regional campuses and the Michigan Medicine compliance office.
