U-M virtual symposium: Global solutions to US nursing shortage

EVENT: Michigan Language Assessment at the University of Michigan will host a two-day virtual symposium, “Global Solutions to the U.S. Nursing Shortage: Policy, Recruitment, and Collaboration,” to explore strategies for strengthening the U.S. nursing workforce through global collaboration, with a focus on internationally trained nurses and the systems that support their transition into the U.S. healthcare environment.

The free event will feature 24 panelists from 18 organizations involved in healthcare workforce development, including the U.S. Health and Human Services Administration, state boards of nursing, credential evaluation organizations, healthcare employers, international recruitment partners and education stakeholders.

Sessions will cover key topics such as:

  • Policy and regulatory trends shaping nurse demand and supply
  • Pathways to U.S. nursing licensure for internationally trained professionals
  • Ethical and sustainable international recruitment practices
  • Licensing, credentialing and immigration bottlenecks
  • State-level workforce hubs and shortage areas
  • The role of English language proficiency in clinical readiness and patient care
  • Employer strategies for integration, retention and long-term stability

“As the demand for qualified nurses continues to grow, it is critical that we work across sectors and borders to develop sustainable solutions,” said Fernando Fleurquin, special adviser for government relations and education at Michigan Language Assessment. “This symposium brings key stakeholders together to identify practical pathways needed to strengthen the U.S. healthcare workforce and patient care in meaningful ways.”
